Meta has rolled out a new safety initiative called “Scams se Bacho,” featuring Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana. This campaign is designed to educate users on how to safeguard themselves against cyber fraud and scams while promoting safer online habits. The initiative aligns with government efforts, receiving support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB).
In a campaign film, Khurrana portrays a savvy wedding guest who employs humor and quick thinking to protect others from falling victim to scams. The film highlights essential safety features available on Meta platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. These features include two-factor authentication, group privacy settings, and the ability to block and report suspicious accounts—all designed to empower users to defend themselves against scams.
Khurrana emphasized the critical need for vigilance in today’s digital environment, noting that online scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. He stressed the importance of public awareness in self-protection. Shivnath Thukral, Meta’s Vice President and Head of Public Policy, reiterated that addressing online scams requires collective action and investment in safety tools and education.
The campaign also sheds light on common scams, such as OTP scams that compromise user accounts, impersonation scams that create a false sense of urgency to extract money, and investment scams that promise unrealistic returns. Meta has committed to enhancing online security, employing over 40,000 staff dedicated to safety initiatives and investing $20 billion since 2016. The company has introduced more than 50 safety tools in the past three years to keep users informed and secure in the digital realm.
