Meta Restructures with Targeted Layoffs Across Key Divisions

< 1 min read

Meta has begun implementing layoffs across multiple departments, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, according to sources familiar with the situation. Unlike widespread, company-wide cuts, these layoffs appear to be smaller in scale and coincide with internal team reorganizations.

Some affected employees have started sharing news of their layoffs publicly. One of the more notable cases is Jane Manchun Wong, who became well-known for her reports on upcoming, unannounced app features before joining Meta’s Threads team in 2023.

In a statement shared with The Verge, Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold explained, “Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy. This includes moving some teams to different locations and transitioning some employees into new roles. In situations where a role is eliminated, we strive to find other opportunities for impacted employees.”

This latest round of layoffs follows earlier job cuts within Meta’s Reality Labs division earlier in the year. The company first laid off 11,000 employees in 2022, a move driven by overestimated growth projections following the COVID-19 pandemic. CEO Mark Zuckerberg later announced further layoffs, cutting an additional 10,000 jobs in 2023 as part of what he called Meta’s “year of efficiency.”
