Facebook apologizes for Plymouth Hoe ‘error’

Facebook has apologized for disposing of posts that named part of a metropolis it deemed to comprise an offensive word.Plymouth Hoe is a historic part of the Devon city’s seafront but the social media platform wrongly identified it as an offensive term.

Facebook users have currently had posts taken down for breaching bullying rules after innocently the usage of the area name.

The organization said it “will take steps to rectify the mistake”. Sunrise Lapthorn, who created the ‘do not unload it, Plymouth and Surrounding areas’ web page said she become surprised to get hold of notifications from facebook telling her “network standards on harassment and bullying” were breached.

She said: “One lady at the institution has been making hats, and she forgot to say in which the gathering factor was so people asked her and he or she wrote Plymouth Hoe.

“I started out getting notifications asking me to do away with the feedback.

“And then her daughter contacted me asking why her mum has been banned from commenting on the organization.”

Other human beings commenting at the organization’s posts have also received notifications and had posts taken down.

Ms Lapthorn said: “I have heard that some facebook companies have been closed down because of this, and with the paintings we do within the community and 26,000 participants, I’ve labored too difficult to have that positioned at danger.”

A facebook corporation spokesperson stated: “those posts have been eliminated in errors and we apologies to folks who have been affected. we are looking into what happened and could take steps to rectify the mistake.”
