Apple and Nvidia are reportedly negotiating to invest in OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, as part of a new fundraising initiative. This investment could push OpenAI’s valuation beyond $100 billion, underscoring its increasing significance in AI.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is considering participating in the funding round, while Bloomberg News has suggested that Nvidia might also be involved. This development follows news that Thrive Capital, a venture capital firm, plans to invest approximately $1 billion in OpenAI, spearheading the current fundraising efforts.

OpenAI’s growing importance is evident in its role in Apple’s AI strategy. In June, Apple integrated ChatGPT into its devices under a program called “Apple Intelligence” and is reportedly preparing to gain an observer seat on OpenAI’s board, reflecting a deepening partnership between the two companies.

Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest investor with over $10 billion already committed, is also expected to join this new funding round, though the specific investment amounts from Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft remain undisclosed.

The surge in OpenAI’s valuation highlights the intense competition in the AI sector, which has escalated since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022. This competition has driven companies across various industries to invest billions in AI technology to remain competitive. Earlier this year, OpenAI was valued at $80 billion following a tender offer led by Thrive Capital, which involved the sale of existing shares.
