Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly planning to introduce a new ‘Username and PIN’ feature, which allows users to hide their phone numbers and use usernames for enhanced privacy. Currently, this feature is available to Android beta users. The introduction of this feature marks a significant step toward bolstering user privacy by enabling users to replace their phone numbers with usernames.
According to a recent report from WABetaInfo, a reliable WhatsApp features tracker, this upcoming update will include a new “Username and PIN” option. This feature allows users to substitute their phone numbers with usernames, adding an extra layer of privacy. Users can choose not to share their mobile numbers; instead, they can display a username to others on the platform. However, it’s important to note that existing contacts with your phone number will still be able to see it, while new contacts will only see your username in the profile section.
The third option, “Username with PIN,” introduces a four-digit PIN that can be shared with specific people. Only those who have this PIN will be able to connect with the user on WhatsApp. While this feature is designed to give users more control over their privacy, it comes with a potential drawback—contacts who already have your phone number can still message you, even if the PIN feature is activated.
This new feature is described as an optional tool, aimed at empowering users by providing greater control over who can contact them on WhatsApp. Currently, it is accessible to WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.18.2 users for testing, but stable Android users will have to wait for the feature to be rolled out in a future update.
In addition to the Username and PIN feature, WhatsApp is also expected to introduce a “like” reaction for status updates, similar to Instagram’s story likes. This feature will allow users to quickly show appreciation for status updates by tapping a heart emoji icon located at the bottom left corner of the screen while viewing the update. The person who posted the status will receive a notification indicating they’ve received a like, and users can view who liked their statuses by checking the standard views list.
Reports from WABetaInfo suggest that the like reaction feature is currently being tested with public beta users and has been in development for some time.
