Google CEO Sundar Pichai has introduced a new AI fund, reflecting on how his upbringing in India shaped his understanding of technology’s transformative potential. Pichai shared a personal story from his childhood in Chennai, highlighting how the arrival of new technologies had a meaningful impact on his family’s life. He specifically recalled the pivotal moment when computers became accessible. “I didn’t have much access to one growing up,” Pichai said. “When I arrived in the US for graduate school, I had unlimited access to computer labs, which was mind-blowing for me.”

This experience, Pichai explained, inspired his decision to pursue a career in technology with a mission to make it more accessible to people around the world.

The newly announced Global AI Opportunity Fund aims to bring AI education to underserved communities by providing resources in local languages. Pichai emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI knowledge and tools are accessible to everyone, regardless of location or language. He explained, “We’re delivering this in local languages, in collaboration with nonprofits and NGOs.”

Pichai also discussed Google’s long-standing commitment to AI, noting that the company has spent the past two decades building the research, infrastructure, and tools that power its AI advancements. A prime example of this is Google Translate, which recently added support for 110 new languages, bringing the total to 246. Google’s long-term goal is to expand this support to 1,000 of the world’s most spoken languages.

AI’s potential to drive economic growth was another key point in Pichai’s speech. He cited studies indicating that AI could boost global labor productivity by 1.4 percentage points and contribute to a 7 percent increase in GDP over the next decade. He also highlighted how AI is already making an impact in emerging markets by optimizing operations and logistics in areas facing infrastructure and connectivity challenges.

While recognizing AI’s vast potential, Pichai stressed the importance of responsible development. He reaffirmed Google’s adherence to its AI Principles, established in 2018, which guide the ethical use of AI. Google works in partnership with international organizations like the UN, OECD, and G7 to ensure AI is developed responsibly and with global cooperation.

“AI must be developed, deployed, and used responsibly from the start,” Pichai emphasized, underscoring the importance of ethical practices and international collaboration in shaping the future of AI.

As Google continues to expand its AI capabilities to serve billions of users, the new fund aims to democratize access to AI, ensuring that communities worldwide can reap the benefits of these technological advancements.
